چکیده

IEEE is currently conducting an effort to standardize a full duplex, spatial reuse, ring network architecture, called the Resilient Packet Ring (IEEE P802.17). We discuss the relationship between spatial reuse and head of line blocking in such a ring. An algorithm that schedules packets individually based on destination address is outlined. We have written a model of the RPR architecture in the programming language Java, and simulated several scenarios in order to evaluate and compare our algorithm with a conventional ring fairness algorithm. Our performance evaluations show that it is possible to achieve significant higher throughput for traffic scenarios where head of line blocking traditionally has degraded performance. Where head of line blocking is not an issue, our algorithm behaves like the traditional one.

SSA: simple scheduling algorithm for resilient packet ring networks

The resilient packet ring (RPR), defined under IEEE 802.17, has been proposed as a high-speed backbone technology for metropolitan area networks. RPR is introduced to mitigate the underutilisation and unfairness problems associated with the current technologies SONET and Ethernet, respectively. The key performance objectives of RPR are to achieve high bandwidth utilisation, optimum spatial reus...

Scheduling in Optical Packet Rings

In the metropolitan area, traditional SONET/SDH circuit switched rings are likely to be replaced with optical packet/burst switching technologies. In this paper we consider a slotted WDM optical packet ring operating without resource reservation mechanisms. In such rings, optical packets in transit have priority over traffic to be inserted by the node. Packets to be inserted are thus queued acc...

Implementation of Resilient Packet Ring Nodes Using Network Processors

Network processors offer a new flexibility for network applications and reduce the time to market for data processing systems. In this paper, we describe the changed development process of the data plane using the Motorola C-5 Network Processor. We implemented a Resilient Packet Ring line card for a SDH cross connect. We show a solution for the support of different Quality of Service classes wi...

Congestion Domain Boundaries in Resilient Packet Rings

In June 2004, the IEEE approved a new standard for Resilient Packet Rings (RPR). The standard is maintained in the 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, and is designated the standard number 802.17. In this paper, we analyze and discuss performance aspects of the Resilient Packet Ring fairness mechanism. We explain that, if the ring is not configured correctly, the fairness mechanism fails to stabil...
